Andy's Safari Birthday

For my son's third birthday - we had a safari theme. I made cupcakes (lions, zebras, elephants and monkeys) for him to bring to preschool and then I made 2 cakes - one was for his actual birthday. The other cake ... I never quite finished. He got the flu, so we had to cancel his birthday party. We did eventually celebrate with the cake ... but, I never actually finished making all the animals to put on the cake. I really loved the cupcakes & they were a BIG hit with the preschoolers! I also LOVED how the lion cake came out ... he was so cute. The cupcakes and lion cake were all buttercream - no fondant, so that made it even more fun. It reminded me of the way my mom used to make all of my birthday cakes.

My other birthday party cake ... with only one animal - a giraffe!

10 Year Millwright Cake

Tomorrow is my husbands 10 year anniversary at his job - his job is as a Millwright (hence the cake). I wanted to do something special to mark the occasion - so I made him a cake to bring to work. I made all the fondant letters look like tools he uses daily at work: Hammer, Screws, Calipers, Square, Wrenches, etc. For the 10 - I did a tig welder handle (for a 1) and a sprocket (for the zero). It was really kind of fun. I did a light blue-gray buttercream and did some outlining and writing in a darker cornflower blue.
My plan was to make a 2 layer cake - but since there will only be a few people at work tomorrow, I just did a single layer.

Happy 10 years hunny! How many more until you retire??

Purse Cake

Tomorrow we are going to a birthday celebration...so I decided to make a cake.
I've been wanting to try a purse cake...so here it is:
A burberry purse cake!

Next time ... I need to wrap the fondant around the top of the cake - so it doesn't slide. i made the base of the purse in a loaf pan and then added two more layers from a 9x13 pan. used Food Writers for the stripes. It's kind of fun making "practice" cakes - so I can figure out the best way to do things. Of course it's not anywhere near perfect - but cute!

Slumber Party

The Slumber Party Cake
Pink and Zebra
The Birthday Girl with her cake

For my niece's slumber party birthday - I made a cake with 6 girls snug as a bug in a rug. Three of the girls had brown hair and three had blonde. The cake was yellow with chocolate chip filling and topped with buttercream and then covered with fondant decorations.

The theme was pink and zebra - so - for the sheet, I used zebra print and the blanket was pink. The girls heads were cute, some had rosy cheeks, crooked smiles, freckles, etc. They all had little hands with red painted nails.

Circus Baby Shower

For my friend's baby shower for her twins, the theme was CIRCUS!
I made a carrot cake and strawberry cupcakes.

The circus animals were very cute! I made Lions and Elephants, Circus Peanuts, Clowns and Red Tents. The circus tent cake - was not my personal favorite piece....I messed up the color and then didn't have any more fondant at 1 in the morning.

The day of the shower was HOT and the vanilla frosting did not set up so well. At the shower the frosting was melting and the animals were not sticking. They tasted delicious though. Next time - I'd use buttercream frosting so that it stiffens and the fondant sticks better.
